Frequently Asked Questions

If you don't find your answer here, please just ask!

Why choose Grow with Jo Tuition?

With all the experience that 20+ years of Primary teaching brings, as well as all the latest training on pedagogy and the curriculum, you can be confident that your child is in the best hands. I prioritise positive relationships, mutual respect and a secure, nurturing environment above all else. Only when these are put at the forefront can children truly thrive, feel willing and able to rise to challenges in their learning and and reach their full potential.

Why choose small group tuition?

Many parents feel that one-to-one tuition offers a more effective learning experience as the child has the tutor's undivided attention. However, there are many advantages to learning in a small group dynamic. Children benefit hugely from interacting with one another. Learning together opens up a whole new world of potential games and activities, and the nature of a group session means that the focus is not solely on one child the entire time. This approach affords children the opportunity to assimilate what they are learning without the pressure of feeling so "on the spot" and is often felt by children to be a less intense experience.

The small group setting also offers an invaluable opportunity for children to develop fundamental skills and qualities that come only through collaborating, listening to and being heard by their peers.

Group sizes at Grow with Jo Tuition will always be small, 6 maximum but usually fewer. This ensures all children will have their individual needs catered for, both in terms of the content of their learning and the approach that suits them best.

Why choose 1:1 tuition?

There will always be some students for whom 1:1 tuition is most suitable, for a whole host of reasons. You know your child best, and if you feel they would benefit most from working 1:1 then I do keep spaces in my timetable available for this. I will welcome the opportunity to speak with you so that I can best accommodate their needs and enable them to thrive and progress through our sessions together.

Why choose online tuition?

Online tuition may sound like a somewhat impersonal experience, however this does not need to be the case by any means. Grow with Jo Tuition sessions are not pre-recorded for children to watch, they are fully interactive live sessions on Zoom, with engaging games and activities, screen sharing and maximum child participation.

In practical terms, online tuition allows families to get the best value for their time. With no travelling to and fro, and the ability to set up anywhere at home or even whilst away, Grow with Jo Tuition sessions only need take as long as they are timetabled for. This means they can fit seamlessly into your already busy day and week with no unnecessary disruption, cost or other logistical issues that come with attending sessions elsewhere.

It is also a huge benefit for some children who may feel more comfortable in their own home for a number of reasons.

I always have and always will prioritise my pastoral role with the children I support. Building positive, trusting relationships is at the forefront of everything I do, and this is every bit as true working together online as it would be face to face.

What format do sessions take?

Grow with Jo Tuition sessions are held online via Zoom and last for 55 minutes.

Sessions are live and fully interactive to ensure maximum active involvement all round. Consequently, I am able to constantly assess children's learning and tailor provision to their needs as we go along, ensuring the appropriate level of individual support and challenge throughout each session and from one session to the next.

Is "fun" learning still quality learning?

Yes! Absolutely! All too often, the words "fun" and "learning" are separated, with the assumption that you only get to have one once you have done enough of the other. In fact, the more engaged and enthusiastic a child (or in fact anyone!) is, the more able they are to learn, and on a far deeper and more meaningful level.

Developing a true love of learning, understanding how we learn and what works best for us, are all endlessly transferable lifelong skills which are easily as important as the content of the learning itself.

Having fun doesn't water down learning, it supercharges it!

How will you get to know my child?

This is the key to everything and underpins all that I do. Getting to know your child is my ultimate priority. If they know and trust me enough to share their interests and what they have been up to lately, they are relaxed enough to learn and make progress with me. If I can understand their character and individual needs, I can establish which approach they will respond best to. If I can identify their academic strengths and areas where they would benefit from greater support, I can tailor their sessions appropriately to challenge them at their own level.

In order to achieve all of this, I offer an initial parent-tutor consultation with all my tuition packages. Here I will listen to you tell me about your child and together we will decide what will work best for them. The first tuition session your child attends online will be spent getting to know each other through interactive games and activities to establish trust and pinpoint focus areas for learning going forward.

What about Home Ed?

We are a home educating family ourselves. As a qualified, experienced Primary teacher of 20+ years and home educating parent of 12+ years, I am in a unique position to understand the benefits and limitations of both the school system and home education. I understand the many and varied approaches that different families take to home ed and will work with you so together we can establish what is best for your child.

I am happy for families to group together for sessions and may be able to accommodate other days/times outside my published timetable if required. I would also be delighted to explore offering provision for other subjects, both within and outside the National Curriculum. Think Nutrition, Cooking, Baking, Sports, Bike maintenance, Science, Geography, Nature and Environmental Studies, Design and Technology...

If you would like to discuss this further then I would love to hear from you, please do get in touch.

Can we join mid term?

Absolutely. Children can join a group or start 1:1 sessions mid term.

What about holidays?

Sessions will continue throughout the half term school holidays in October, February and May. There will be a one-week break in tuition over Christmas and Easter. If your child is unable to attend a session during half terms or other holidays please let me know. If this is a group session I can make a recording for you and your child to catch up at a time to suit you.

I would like tuition for my child in a subject you have not listed.

I am a fully qualified teacher with 20+ years experience in the primary classroom covering all curriculum subjects. I am passionate about learning beyond the "core" subjects - there is nothing I love more! But realistically there is more demand for English and Maths tuition than anything else. If you would like to explore tuition in any other subject, please do get in touch, I look forward to hearing from you.

I can't make the times/days you have available.

I am available on Thursday and Friday daytimes and evenings but other days and times may be possible by arrangement. Please do get in touch if you feel the current timetable I offer does not cater for your needs and I will accommodate where I can.

How do I book?

Please get in touch either via the contact form, email, phone, text, Facebook messenger or Instagram - I am very reachable! I am also very responsive so if you do not get a reply within a day or so please do resend or try a different method of communication. As we all know with the best will in the world some emails will end up in the "junk" folder or messenger notifications not pop up. It is possible that for some reason your message may not have reached me or my reply may not have reached you. Please be assured that I will always endeavour to respond promptly to any communications I receive.

What is your policy for missed sessions?

It is inevitable that occasionally sessions may be missed through illness or other commitments. To ensure that children do not miss out and best value is still achieved through the program, as long as I have prior notice I will aim to record any group session that is missed and send on a link enabling your child to catch up afterwards. If your child has 1:1 tuition with me then I will endeavour to rearrange the session with you at a mutually agreeable time.

Thanks for getting in touch!
